Senators, Craig Anderson Agree To Two-Year, $9.5M Deal

Senators goalie Craig Anderson agreed to a two-year, $9.5 million contract extension Friday that will pay him $5.5 million in 2018-19 and $4 million in 2019-20.

The 36-year-old American was set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.

Jaromir Jagr Drawing Interest From Blues

The St. Louis Blues have discussed the possibility of signing 45-year-old free agent forward Jaromir Jagr, the second-leading scorer in NHL history.

"He's a great player," general manager Doug Armstrong said Thursday. "Certainly we've talked internally about him, as well as a number of players. But we're really going to have to dig deep into how our style of play is and what type of players can come in and complement our style."

Sharks' Ward Decides Not To Kneel For Anthem

Joel Ward is not going to kneel for the national anthem.

The San Jose Sharks forward posted a lengthy statement to Twitter on Thursday afternoon to explain his decision. Ward, one of about 30 black players in the NHL, previously told reporters he "wouldn't cross out" joining a movement that has swept the NFL.

Joel Ward Mulling Anthem Protest

Sharks forward Joel Ward said he is uncertain if he will protest during the national anthem at games this season, but said he has gotten support to do so from the team's brass.

Ward, who is Canadian and one of about 30 black players currently in the league, told the San Jose Mercury News that protesting during "The Star Spangled Banner" is "definitely something I wouldn't cross out."

Penguins Will Visit The White House

The Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins will visit the White House this year, the team said in a statement on Sunday.

The Penguins said they "respect the institution of the Office of the President."

"Any agreement or disagreement with a president's politics, policies or agenda can be expressed in other ways," the statement read. "However, we very much respect the rights of other individuals and groups to express themselves as they see fit."

Senators captain Erik Karlsson skated with his teammates Saturday for the first time since having surgery to repair torn tendons in his left foot on June 14.

Karlsson, a two-time Norris Trophy winner as the NHL's best defenseman, wore a light blue non-contact jersey and did not take part in all the drills during the morning skate at Canadian Tire Centre before a preseason game against the Canadiens.

Alexander Steen Injures Left Hand

Blues forward Alexander Steen will miss the rest of training camp after suffering a left hand injury in the team's first preseason game.

The 33-year-old Steen was hurt against Dallas on Tuesday night and will be re-evaluated in three weeks. He is entering his 10th season with the Blues and coming off a year in which he had 16 goals and 35 assists in 76 regular-season games.

The Arizona Coyotes acquired defenseman Jason Demers from the Florida Panthers on Sunday for forward Jamie McGinn.

Letang, who underwent season-ending neck surgery on April 13 to repair a herniated disk, said he felt healthy Tuesday but continues to take his recovery one day at a time. He hopes to play when the defending Stanley Cup champions open their regular season against the Blues on Oct. 4.
